The National City Railroad Station was the first station constructed in California by the Santa Fe Railroad in 1882. The building was also the first Italianate station constructed as the West Coast terminus of the Santa Fe transcontinental line. In order to obtain Federal funds for the rehabilitation of the historic depot, Heritage Architecture & Planning prepared a Historic Property Survey Report and Finding of Effect to meet the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 Section 106 Process. Heritage also prepared the National Register for Historic Places application and the property was nominated to the Register at a state-wide significance for a period of significance. Heritage was also the architect for the building’s rehabilitation, including restoring the original 1882 color scheme.
The National City Railroad Station currently serves as a railroad museum and community meeting hall.
