Guajome Ranch
Vista, CA

Rancho Guajome PostcardGuajome Ranch remains one of California's best examples of Anglo-Hispanic domestic adobe architecture. Owned by the County of San Diego, the Ranch was built on an original Mexican land grant in 1852-1853. This 43 room one-story adobe hacienda with an inner courtyard plan was built and owned by Cave Couts and remained in his family until 1975.
Rancho GuajomeHeritage Architecture & Planning prepared a detailed Historic Structures Report, Maintenance Manual, and developed unique methods for material conservation. An elaborate drainage system was designed following an extensive geotechnical and hydrologic study. Following approval from the State Historic Preservation Office concerning the period of significance (1920-1930), construction documents were prepared for full seismic retrofit and restoration. A Guajome Ranch Visitors Program and Interpretative Center was also developed. The Ranch will continue to reflect early California history and the interaction of the Mexican and California relations.

An $800,000 grant from the State Historic Preservation Office provided for the stabilization of the walls and roof. The County of San Diego provided additional restoration funds.
