El Garces/Needles Santa Fe Depot
Needles, CA

Historic PostCardThe El Garces Hotel/Needles Santa Fe Depot, built in 1908, was once considered the crown jewel of the entire Fred Harvey chain of hotel/restaurants that extended along the Santa Fe Railroad. It also served as the hub of commercial activity for the City of Needles during the period when railroad travel was the primary mode of transcontinental transportation.

A National Register of Historic Places Nomination was prepared by Heritage Architecture & Planning. Rehabilitation plans were prepared for a portion of the 64,000 square foot building to be used as an Intermodal Transportation Center, including a Passenger Waiting Area. In addition, because federal Transportation Enhancement funds were being utilized, the firm prepared a Section 106 document in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.
