County Administration Center
San Diego, CA

West side of County Administration Center. The 1938 San Diego County Administration Center was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a local historic landmark in 1986. The Beaux Arts style building, constructed of concrete and erected during 1936-38 as a Works Project Administration (WPA) project has been hailed by art critics and historians as the "best of all government buildings in San Diego." It continues to serve as the seat of County government.

Heritage Architecture & Planning prepared an Architectural Feasibility Study for the adaptive reuse of the tower. Floor plans were developed to illustrate design concepts and provide a basis for structural engineering analysis. A detailed code analysis was prepared to illustrate those issues dealing with occupancy classification and fire exiting requirements. A Concept Master Plan was developed for the interior spaces of the CAC and its existing landscaping.

Heritage Architecture & Planning also provided services for Construction Documents, Construction Observation Services, and Record Drawings for the Seismic Retrofit and Renovation of the tower including a HVAC system for the first and second floors, exterior refinishing, and roof repair. The County retained occupancy of the building during the eighteen months of construction. Approximately 1,200 County employees have their offices within the County Administration Center.
